9/11: United States Naval Station Newport (Newport, Rhode Island)

U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School. Building 164. Calculus Class. Disbelief. Followed Orders to Double-Time to Barracks at Chester Nimitz Hall. Lock Down. Armed Shore Duty Rotation begun. Base Marines with M-16's and trucks with .50 cals walking the base roads. Fear that whoever would attack the D.O.D. strategy compound at the U.S. Naval War College 1200 meters away. Looked up at a 45 degree angle to see billows of smoke from New York City. Tears. Anger that has yet to dissipate.

I will never forget. I gained respect for the Marines that were studying to gain admittance to the U.S. Naval Academy or the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. I believe there were 26 prior enlisted Marines in my prep class. 5 of them left the opportunity of a lifetime to go back to the field, fight and die.

I'll never forget.
