Visualization

Here is a link http://www.utexas.edu/features/2008/11/24/athletes_minds/ that I just took off Lance Cantu's blog http://youcantu.blogspot.com. Let me start off with saying that I believe in this 100%. To premise the concept of visualization in sports and myself I need to take you back to when I was 5 yrs old. I started playing soccer at that age and I would "day dream" about scoring goal after goal, or blocking shots if I had to play goalie! When I turned 13 I use to listen to my walkman the night before my city league games and "day dream" about the goals I was I going to score and more specifically, how many it would be. Then when I made the varsity soccer team I would take my day dreaming to a new level.... I began to VISUALIZE every action, move, pass, shot.... and most importantly, every GOAL I was going to score. During Christmas break I spent everyday VISUALIZING set pieces and break away shots I was going to get... I would go practice this 2-3 times a day during MY CHRISTMAS BREAK, while all the other kids lounged around! Then on my first Varsity road trip to Houston before my first game, I visualized how I would score my first goal.... it took 4 hours to get from Copperas Cove to Houston and for the then entire trip it replayed in my head... over and over and over! 80 minutes into my first Varsity game I had netted my first varsity goal the EXACT WAY I HAD VISUALIZED IT.... a breakaway from midfield with me and the goalie,...20 yard volley into the back of the net.... Copperas Cove 1 Clear Lake 1. The funny thing about the goal was how all the seniors thought I just got Lucky... little did they know! To make a long story short I set every scoring record in my high school that may still stand today, all coming from the practice of VISUALIZATION!

Now to bring you up to speed to where I'm at today..... I no longer play soccer, I crossfit. I'm a decent crossfitter at that just because of the pure athletic ability I achieved playing soccer for 20+ years,... but I'm not satisfied with that. I want to be an elite crossfitter. My wife likes to give me a hard time about I'm not in high school anymore and I can't soly rely on the good old days, and she is half right with that assumption. It's time to ADD the VISUALIZATION practice to my training that I haven't used since my high school days! To be continued!

Patience of a Child?

..is that an oxymoron? Children do not have patience! My daughter is so persistent when she wants something from me that I either succumb to the pressure or she decides she doesn't want it anymore! Perfect example is RIGHT NOW, she is currently laying beside me reciting every word she knows, or asking "what's that?" over and over, or "daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy" until I look at her. It's not enough for me to acknowledge her by saying "yes Savannah?", she wants me to give her all my attention. This is all going on because she wants to play with me nothing more, nothing less. What happens to us as we get older? Do we no longer have the desire to get what we want, when we want it? The old saying "patience is a virtue" what does that mean? wait around long enough and you might get want you want??? no thanks! Kids are GREAT reminders at what we once were, and if you have forgotten what being a kid was like I highly recommend spending some time around them as often as you can,.. preferably ages newborn- 3yrs old! Desire to get what you want, small victories are better than no victories, and even failing produces victories if seen in the right light! Don't wait around for something to happen because it may never happen!

This Is Your Life

Fight Club the movie was released in 1999. I remember so vividly how it transformed me because I saw beyond the fighting and the actual true meaning to the movie. I can still remember sitting at the laundry mat writing in my journal for at least an hour! I can honestly tell you that I have never journal about anything for half that time! This little clip is so right on about how we should live that as of yesterday it's where I'm at... this may or may not make sense to you, and I apologize for that. I'm not the most eloquent writer. But if you have half a brain, watch the clip for what it's worth and you to can start LIVING!

http://frimmin.com/movies/fightclub.php, here is another link just in case you can't grasp the meaning of the clip, are you READY to live?!

November 4th 2008

By the end of the day we'll know who our next president will be. McCain or Obama????? For some.. "it's scary times ahead!" others, "we'll finally have change!" What do you think?

As for the Kepler/ Thiel household, we will only become a stronger, closer, and loving family then before. If times do become tough we'll do whatever it takes as a family to take care of each other. We Will Not Live in FEAR! Living in fear will not solve anything and it will destroy you from the inside out! Peace and Love to one another.

LIFE

Life is very precious and indespensible. Everyday is a new beginning and with the new beginning comes new opportunities. I'm truly blessed to have an amazing wife and two of the best kids a person can ask for. Because of them I'm reminded of what is important and how precious the time is that we get to have together. I don't have a lot to say other then THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME.

PURPOSE

the eternal question that most of us ask ourselves...... what is my purpose???? why did "God" put me here, or for non-believers in a creator... why was I born? For a the vast majority of my life I have wondered what the heck am I doing here, and where am I going after this? And for the same amount of time it has created a void in me that makes me feel incomplete. In December of 2006 I was introduced to the DVD The Secret, along with the book The Power of Now by Tolle, Think and Grow Rich by Hill just to name a few. And during that time of new discoveries, I became transformed! But because of the previous 28 years of "not knowing" it didn't last long. .. which Tolle foreshadowed would happen. In one of the beginning chapters it flat out says don't expect to become clear after reading this book one time..... I have read it 4-5 times and will continue to read it for as long as I live! Back to the eternal question.. What is our Purpose???? The answer to this question is something you already know and will be revealed to you once you start removing the things in your life that are keeping you from revealing it..... to quote Tolle again, You already know the answers to all the questions, you just can't hear because of the interference! The last 2 years haven't been perfect and I still question time to time but I'm more at ease then I was back in December 2006.

FGB 111 was this past Saturday and what a great event it turned out to be. $28,000 raised in donations, 100 participants, many more spectators, a dj, break dancers, UT football, what else??? My fgb score was 314, so so... but better then last year by 25 points.

I know it has been awhile since my last blog, and it's not that I didn't want to because I have thought about blogging a bunch, but I have been all over the place with my thoughts and actions I wouldn't know where to start. Perfect example is that run-on sentence I just wrote. I have been thinking about Carey, Savannah, and Stone, and what I need to do as a husband, father, friend to make their life better. What is it that I do that I shouldn't do? Death has been on my mind too, and not in the suicidal way, but that it's inevitable and it's going to happen so I better stop wasting my time left with my family, friends, and so on. I need to grow as a person. It's sad to say but I have digressed in my personal growth in the last year and half..... that's not good! I could go on and on.. my workouts have been terrible, my eating is atrocious, my energy level is non existent.... but their is an upside to all of this..... I have recognized my demise and as of 9.29.08 5:42pm, it's not that way anymore. I have died to my old self and like the Phoenix have risen a new being! peace

Wealth

Wealth...... what does it mean to you? What it means to be wealthy in my eyes is that you are financially secure, healthy, and happy/ spiritual/ family. If you lack anyone of these then your NOT wealthy. I have been dedicated to crossfit for the last 3 weeks because of what the games put in my face. What I haven't done is look at the other parts of my life that need work as well. What better time then NOW to put myself in a position to be wealthy in all aspects of life. keep me accountable, Lord knows I need it.

3 weeks down..11 months to go!

I have been committed to crossfit.com website for 3 weeks now. I made a pact with myself to do whatever the wod was and do it right and legit! It hasn't been easy! It seems that every WOD that comes up is something I use to avoid..... heavy dl, ohs, etc... it's as if Coach knows my weakness and is training me specifically for the games 09'! And you know what, I'm excited about it! Today's workout was "Jeremy" 21-15-9 OHS, Burpees. I have done OHS twice now in 2 yrs of doing crossfit... pathetic! A perfect example of an exercise that would show up in the WOD's and I would do something else instead. My time was 18min and 50 secs. I wanted to quit this workout so bad but I didn't because of the fact it is a hero workout plus I'm stronger(mentally) then that.

I'll leave you with this, after the games I made a comment about a "Premonition" that I had... crossfit had me smack dab in the middle of the 08' highlight video, after that IO mentioned to whomever was listening at the time, that it was a premonition for next year! Meaning watch out because I'm going to be a force to be reckoned with. Yesterday I was checking out my favorite Crossfit sites and as usual I checked in on NSC north santa cruz, and low and behlod the blog topic was "Premonition" with a picture of Big Mike and Myself doing "Fran" at the Games! I was speechless! take that for what it's worth, but for me, it brought a tear to my eye because I know the sky is the limit! peace!

.COM!

(carey and I in San Francisco 2008)

As I said in my previous post.. "i"m going to stick to the crossfit.com website and do whatever it says". I have done just that for the last 5 days. In doing so, it has created a piece of mind for me. I go to the gym and focus on what the WOD is all about, and then I rock it out. I even suprised myself the other day after the deadlift workout,.. I was reracking my weight and decided to attempt a few power cleans just to see if I could do it... I thought I had left 195# on the bar, and decided that would be the weight I would attempt. 5 attempts, 2 fails 3 good, but in all it felt good. I felt strong, and I definitely felt as though I could have possibly added 10#'s or more. Well, low and behold, it was 205# on the bar which is my PR, a weight I haven't attempted in over a year and half!

As for my food intake. I'm trying to get closer and closer to the Paleolithic Diet as the days go on. I'm still winging myself of dairy... milk, creamer, cheese, butter, etc... I've also cut back my bread intake to nil! My energy level is a little up and down with it right now because I'm not consuming enough calories, but I'm getting better at taking the time to eat meals in between meals.

Stay tuned it's only going to get better.........

Starting Over

The Crossfit Games 2008 have come and gone, and after it was all said and done I placed 136 out of 191 participants. As bad as that may seem, the difference between the top 40 and my 136 is only a few minutes! But to be honest, I was not prepared to go to the games and actually think I was going to place in the top 40, much less the top ten. My brother-n-law JT placed third overall with back to back gut wrenching performances to jump from 30th place to 11, to all the way to his final standing of third! Very proud of him!

As of right now, I'm going to start doing everything that Crossfit.com posts! I'm going to stop avoiding the heavy lifting exercises, run less but run hard when it comes up on the site, and really focus on doing all the lifts correctly. I'm going to stop cutting corners and stop being concerned with "fast times"! As the games showed me more then anything... do it right and do all your reps, or it don't count!!!! I promise to myself that I'll be more then ready for next years games and I promise to have a better showing, who knows, I might just win the whole thing!

Crossfit Games Countdown

13 days and counting before I strap it on against the elite of the elite at the Crossfit Games in Aromas, California. Am I ready you ask????? Does a one legged duck swim in a circle? Since I won the Fittest Games Challenge, I have stepped up my workout's intensity level, but more importantly, I have corrected and perfected my form on some of my weaker exercises. I still have work to do but I gaurantee you this, I'll give it my all and will not quit, no matter how hard it is! For the next 13 days I will practice, train, and prepare myself harder then I have ever practiced, trained, or prepared myself! I know that last sentence may sound like gibberish, but 13 days is 312 hours... 18, 720 minutes... 1, 123,200 seconds! To me that seems like an eternity! i'm not going to post again until Wednesday the 2nd to update you before I go and win the gold, until then... peace

CLARITY

What does Clarity mean.... The webster dictionary states clarity as the quality or state of being CLEAR; lucidity. What does CLEAR mean??? Webster states the definition of CLEAR is free of clouds, mist or haze, FREE FROM DOUBT OR CONFUSION, and so forth. Are you clear? Supposely the highest level you can reach in the Church of Scientology is Clear... is that so bad? I know my blogs are up and down, side to side, or whatever you want to call them, but my goal is always the pursuit of clarity... or more inportantly, being CLEAR.

Going Beyond Limitation

In each person's life there comes a time when he or she pursues growth and expansion on the level of form. This is when you strive to overcome limitation such as physical weakness or financial scarcity, when you acquire new skills and knowledge, or through creative action bring something new into this world that is life-enhancing for yourself as well as others...

When you are present, when your attention is fully in the Now, that Presence will flow into and transform what you do. There will be quality and power in it. You are present when what you are doing is not primarily a means to an end but fulfilling in itself, when there is joy and aliveness in what you do. And, of course, you cannot be present unless you become friendly with the present moment. That is the basis for effective action, uncontaminated by negativity.
(This is an entry for the Power of Now, written by Eckhart Tolle)

Here is a picture of my father, whom I didn't have much of a relationship with up until I was about to get married.... that time frame, 25 years! Since my father has retired from the military, he has been going beyond his limitations as a father, husband, and whom I now consider my best friend!

love

As I have said before, "I'm not that good with words...", so for me to describe my feelings toward my children or my wife can never be fully expressed! I love my family more then anything on this Earth, but I still have a selfish side that wants to do want it wants to do! And when that side shows its ugly face it's not really "who I am", more less who I was before I created a family. All I can really add to this is that if that ugly side ever appears of your own, close your eyes and pause before you decide to act on it.... that ugliness just might stop showing it's ugly face! peace, and oh by the way... the training is still go so, so... The new facility opens up on Monday and I can't wait to get back to group training!

Choices

Everything that you do in life is a choice.... To get out of bed, or stay in bed. To workout or not to workout. To finish something you started or quit! To grab a beer or to drink the water instead...just to name a few. Everything you do is a choice. The reason I bring this up is that I'm always at a battle with myself to make the "RIGHT" choices, whatever that may be. Just today, I passed a church billboard that read...."to break a bad habit, you have to replace it with a good habit" Right now I'm making the "RIGHT" choices, and right now is all we have.

How Time Flies!

In the last 4 weeks, some amazing things have happened to me, but none more special then my wife giving birth to my son... Stone Tilton Pierce Kepler! Then 3 days later we celebrate my daughters 2 yr birthday (April 15), and then most recently I placed first along with Ken Cutrer for the right to go to California to compete in the Crossfit Fittest Games!

To start things off, I had always hoped for a son. My daughter is very special to me and I wouldn't trade her for the world, but I wanted the opportunity to raise a son as well. And let me tell you, at the rate he is growing, it's going to be a BIG challenge... but one that I definitely am up for!

Now for my daughter.... she turned 2 on April 15th. We had a party for her at AMY'S ICECREAM, and we invited some friends and family... good times! But it does make you realize and appreciate that they grow up quick, so don't take it for granted because before you know they're out the door!

As for my training...pathetic! I took some time off when Stone was born, and out of the 3 weeks I was away from the gym I may have worked out 3-4 times! I was doing that per week! On top of not going to the gym I was "celebrating" a little much with all the guest we had over the same 3 weeks. Starting May 3rd, I vowed not to "celebrate" until after the Fittest Games which are in July... which leads me up to my last exciting occurrence......

On May 3rd, I won my second event in a row to tie for first in overall points for the opportunity to go to Cali to compete in the Fittest Games! To take in consideration that I placed 3rd in my first event, 3rd in my second event, and then back to back first to make my comeback... I'm pretty stoked about it! But I will say that to compete with the big boys, I'm going to have to up my game to a whole new level. A level that I have been to before but didn't maintain it, a level that will take dedication, desire, sacrifices, passion.. I don't plan on going to Cali and getting my ass handed to me, and as of May 3rd I put a challenge to myself to do what it takes to get to that level.. ELITE! peace

Capital 10K

Yesterday is only a memory now, but while running the Cap 10k I was able to reminisce about the last time I ran the Cap 10k... 5 years ago! That was the day the my wife and I rekindled our relationship and decided that we should get married. Crazy how time flies! The weather was not what I was hoping for, it rained the entire time! Nonetheless, I was able to finish the run in under 40 minutes... roughly a 6min 45 sec pace, not too shabby. I think it's time for a cleanse that way I can up my training, but with Spring in the air and summer around the corner the temptations get more fierce for me to hit the boat among other things!!!! What do I want more?

Still at it!

Another week has come, and another weewk with good results. Went to Houston this weekend to do the Crossfit Total and set a couple of PR's in the process! 300lb Squat, 370lb Dl....with room to improve on both! My squat could probably improve 10lbs right now, but my DL could possibly improve by 30lbs. In a meet like the one on Saturday you get 3 attempts per exercise, in doing so I just ran out of attempts. But needless to say, I was very pleased with my effort. Then on Sunday, Carey, Savannah, and I went down to Town Lake to run. I only did the long 4.9 mile loop, instead of the 7 mile loop I have been doing... another strong outing. As long as I take life day by day, moment by moment, it's all good! Live in the Now, it's all we really have anyways, right!?

Quantum Physics

Another week has passed and as if it happened in a blink of an eye! I was able ot get in some good workouts this week with one short run of 4 miles, and then my long 7.5 miler on Sunday. I need new shoes, and I NEED to improve my form!
During this past week, my brother-n-law Jeremy told me about a video on Youtube called "What the Bleep do We Know?" It's 9hrs of video condensed into 2 hrs for people like me who want only the meat of everything. In this video, it basically states that you make your own reality through what you think your eyes see... and that you as an individual have total control over what happens to you . If you perceive your reality as happy..positive... exuberance..etc.., that is what you will attract. It is the LAW OF ATTRACTION working at it's finest! I highly recommend this video to anyone that wants to be enlightened. until next time, peace.

1 Week Down.....many to go!

They say it takes 21 days to create a habit... I have spent close to 30 years creating and perfecting bad ones! I'm feeling pretty good about my workouts I have done in the last week, plus I started to zone my meals today, sort of! I accidentally consume both of my snacks at the same time. Before I started my "training", I weighed in at 185lbs, 11% body fat. I'm currently at 182lbs, 10.2% body fat. I have a feeling after this week I'm currently in that body fat % is going to drop significantly while my weight is going to go up. Here is a pic of Jeremy and I finish up his marathon... I'm on the right.

Let's recap the weekend.... I comleted a 7.5 mile run in less then 6o minutes on Saturday! It has been over 2 years since I have run that distance! Now it's time to work on my eating. I'll be starting to ZONE all my meals tomorrow, which will take some dedication, but I have to be strict on myself. Anytime I become lax in my daily routine.. schedule.. or whatever it may be, I screw up... I don't want to screw up anymore! that's it for now, peace out.

kettlebells!

2 Words for You...BO JACKED! I have completed 2 kettlebell workouts this week as part of my marathon training, and let me tell you, I am feeling it! I have used kettlebells in other Crossfit workouts, but I have never dedicated entire workouts to that particular piece of equipment. If you have never experienced using them I highly recommend you signing up for one of Crossfitcentral classes they offer (www.crossfitcentral.com). I just feel lighter, but stronger at the same time! I know it is helping me build muscle around my knees which is a definite plus... tomorrow I run,.... then Saturday I will attempt my first 7 mile run in over 2 years,..if I'm feeling up to it after completing the 5mile loop. until I write again...Peace

Alpha

Yesterday moning I took part in something special. My brother-n-law, Jeremy, ran in the AT&T Marathon in Austin, Texas. I was lucky enough to help pace him in the last 6 miles of the race. The effects of the run were starting to take a hold of him when I joined up at mile 20. But Jeremy persevered and was able to complete his first marathon in 4hrs 07min!

While we were running, I thought to myself,... "I can do this!" I should tell you now though,... I have complained about my knees, ankles, hips, back for years! I played soccer for 20 plus years, and it has gradually taken it's toll on me. But SO WHAT, RIGHT?!

So, today I started my training for my first marathon with a 4 mile run around the neighborhood, and guess what??? Everything hurt, But SO WHAT!
